Sometimes poetic, sometimes narrative, sometimes striking a particular note with the listener and, sometimes so obtuse, that the composer may not even know the true meaning.
Sometimes, it seems our very existence is being carved out in song.
As a songwriter, it must become very difficult to come up with a truly original idea.
Replication is everywhere.
I know this from my own pitiful attempts, all of which culminate in either the accidental ripping off of someone else or the blatant paraphrasing or plagiarism of whatever is occupying my mind at the time.
How fortunate I am that this only happens whenever I try to commit my inner thoughts to lyrical verse.
Some people can't help but talk in this way.
Earlydoors its all swings and roundabouts but at the end of the day when the cards are on the table the last man standing will be the one who talks the biggest load of pish.
Many of the people I encounter, whether it is in person or via the media, seem to be so incapable of anything, even remotely like an original thought, that their conversation is one long stream of clichés and acronyms. This dilution of our language, with the every day use of euphemism and mnemonic, challenges us to the point where sometimes, the conversation is so full of throwaway speech, that it is hard to focus on what is actually being said.
I even found a website offering over 3000 clichés for people who can't find the right words to say - how fucked up and desperate is that?
Surely if you're in a good humour, "go away" is right; if you're in a bad humour then there is only one alternative.
We don't need a website to tell us how to speak.
Next thing we'll be getting is 'I'm a celebrity, talk me out of this' and other similar excuses for stupidity.
In preparation for such heresy, I hereby, launch the campaign for real speech starting with some of the most annoying cliches -
Sick as a parrot (never yet seen a parrot being sick)
Like I said (when in actual fact you didn't)
Early doors (whatever the fuck that means) at least the TV show has a Roddy Frame theme tune.
Explore every avenue (and also the trees???)
Light at the end of the tunnel (hopefully the one that precedes the death of its user)
At the end of the day (so over used I can't even think of what the individual words mean)
It was all handbags (I blame football players)
Back to the serious stuff - I started off on the subject of lyrics.
Haven't managed to up the old masters of misery but should have some Dylan & Cohen boots for next week. As an alternative, I offer for your enjoyment, a couple of our greatest, unsung songwriters
